Rachel Carson Collective Commitments

Rachel Carson Mission Statement: Guide and empower students to be kind, respectful, and responsible community members, who work together to achieve both individual and group goals.

Parent Commitments

Provide a supportive, home based environment by:

  • Routinely discussing your child’s interactions with other students. Provide constructive follow up to resolve confusing interactions. Assist your child in knowing when/who to contact for support as needed.
  • Providing a comfortable/consistent working environment at home to complete homework and check in with your child.
  • Engaging your student in conversations about what they are learning. Set clear, family specific expectations of our students for school.
  • Utilize ParentVue to maintain collaborative effort with teachers.
  • Utilize the school/teacher websites to better understand what is being taught and how it is being taught to make it easier to help students.

Become involved in school based activities by:

  • Participating in PTO efforts to create activities/fundraisers.
  • Read the monthly newsletter in a timely manner.
  • Volunteer at least twice during the school year for an activity at school (field trips, classroom support, PTO events).

Engage in academic socialization with our student and other students by:

  • Discussing post middle school education options (high school, trade school, college).
  • Having open discussions with students about their dreams, interests, and passions related to education.
  • Helping make the school to life connection by exposing children to different occupations, topics and issues outside of school that reinforce what they are learning (i.e., book talks at Powell’s, Ted talks, etc.).
  • Engaging with and discussing civic engagement and current events.
  • Encouraging activism with a purpose.
